Self-Rescue ProcedureIn the event of equipment failure, insufficient wind, or other problem that prevents you from sailing back to shore, you may have to Self-Rescue. Depending on conditions, you may choose to enter the water and pull or push your boat, lie on the deck at the bow and paddle with your arms (see Figure), or sit on the deck and use a paddle you have brought for this purpose. In very heavy wind, it may be necessary to dismantle your sailing rig and lash it to the boat before paddling to shore. The best procedure is to prevent the need for Self-Rescue by inspecting your equipment carefully, remaining near shore, and gaining knowledge and experience in operating a sailboat.
